MISSIONS
First Presbyterian is passionate about helping our neighbors both near and far. By actively engaging in the world around us, we hope that our faith comes alive in a tangible way that makes a meaningful difference.
Local Missions
Assistance Progam
Most of the funds raised via the church’s annual rummage sale go towards the transportation and utilities assistance program. This program helps local community members purchase gasoline and/or pay electric bills. Funds are distributed in person on Mondays and Tuesdays until the monthly allotment has been exhausted.
Winter Shelter Project
The Tullahoma Winter Shelter Project, a collaboration with other local churches, provides those without shelter a warm place to stay during the months of January and February. First Presbyterian typically hosts the winter shelter for two weeks—one week in January and then another week in February. Volunteers from the church stay with the guests overnight and provide dinner.
Christmas Food Baskets
The Christmas food basket donation event is held each December. Christmas hams are purchased via budgeted giving, and then members of the congregation volunteer to purchase additional grocery items consistent with a large and festive meal in order to complete the “basket”. In 2023, the Mission Committee, in an effort to provide recipients with more choice in receiving the donations and to cut down on food waste, decided to move away from delivering baskets to recipients’ homes, and instead began setting up a grocery store inside the Williams Family Center to allow individuals to shop for what they need and prefer.
Mission Sunday
The second Sunday of each month is “Mission Sunday” at First Presbyterian. As part of the offering, the congregation is invited to bring food and hygiene items to donate to Good Samaritan Ministry, the non-profit charitable organization next door that helps families in need.
National & International Missions
At a national and international level, our outreach occurs primarily through budgeted giving and special offerings. Since 2021 the budget has included financial support for a local missionary family affiliated with the International Association for Refugees (IAFR). The family is currently ministering to forcibly displaced people in Lille, France.
One Great Hour of Sharing is one of the special offerings organized by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) that our congregation participates in each year. This offering coincides with our annual Great Bread Auction, an event that invites church members to bake items that others in the church can bid on and take home. All proceeds from the auction support One Great Hour of Sharing, the single largest way that Presbyterians come together every year to combat hunger and disaster recovery, both in the States and abroad.
